Our mission
Here at Onslow Literacy Council Inc., we have one mission: to provide free, individualized tutoring to adults ages sixteen and up in the Onslow area.
We work towards empowering adults with the ability to read and write in order to achieve their full potential as individuals, as employees, as parents, and as members of the community at large.
Through our ProLiteracy based curriculum that is specially curated for adult learning, we are able to meet the needs of our students and offer them guidance in literacy, writing, basic math, pre-high school equivalency, life skills, English as a Second Language (ESL), and citizenship. Our tutors are all passionate about this organization and are well-trained, and many have education or prior teaching backgrounds. We want to uplift our community and guarantee that any adult, regardless of race, income, or education level, can come to us for a personalized education that helps them achieve their goals and feel needed and valuable within the community.
According to the last survey of National Assessment of Adult Literacy 1 in 6 adults of Onslow County cannot read or write at the basic sixth grade level leaving them vulnerable to problems with parenting, employment, health, safety and self esteem. We recruit tutors, train them, and then match them with learners who have already been assessed. We monitor their progress by frequent assessments. All this is at no cost to the tutors or students.
